A Haiku-Ode for the
ARA Uruguay

(The Moth, Sleeping)

The moth, sleeping—
He doesn’t know
The lamps that burned that night so low

When the ARA Uruguay,
In the wee hours of a storm
In the Antarctic ice

With a crew of eight,
Brought home, on that cold
December day, in 1903

—to the home port of Buenos Aires
The Crew of the Swedish
Expedition…

The Ship called “The Antarctic”

Notes: The ARA Uruguay (Corveta), built in England, which has a 135-years of service (1872), still in the Armada de la Republica Argentina, its operational history—1874-1926; resides as a museum, in Buenos Aires, it was a gunboat, but most famous for its—it was commissioned as an Antarctic rescue ship, operating within the Drake Passage, and around Cape Horn. The ship most notable action was when it rescued the Swedish Antarctic Expedition, which took place between 1901.1903, “The Antarctic,” ship being destroyed by ice.
